All you ever wanted to know about the Barton Springs Salamander, brought to you by the Watershed Protection Department. The Barton Springs Salamander, Eurycea sosorum, is only found in three of the Barton Springs outlets in Zilker Park. This amphibian, around 2½ inches long, has permeable skin and external gills which it retains throughout its adult life. It is so sensitive to pollution that it has toxic reactions to plastic containers and detergent residues. This sensitivity makes the salamander an incorruptible indicator of water quality in our much-loved watershed.

The SPLASH! Into the Edwards Aquifer exhibit provides a comprehensive educational experience about the science of the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer and its conservation as a natural resource.
